Shula “Backtracks”
by Bryan
“If they run the table, and they win all the games, then they are doing it within the rules of the National Football League. And there shouldn’t be any asterisk to it. That would be the accomplishment that they made. It would be the best in all of sports.”
Again, it’s a shame that he apologized for something he almost certainly did not say. This is a predictable 2-day story that could have been easily avoided if Gary Myers had done his job.
Yeah, it’s definitely an issue of semantics. I’m willing to cut Shula a break based on two things: one, he never said “The Patriots deserve an asterisk” and two, I don’t really care what he said and would rather the whole thing went away so we could talk about actual football.
but Shula did say that the patriots were fined and the record is tainted, similar to an asterisk next to Barry Bonds name. Now, the question is, isn’t this the same thing?
I agree with you 100% that reporters tape their interviews. That’s how I knew Shula never said, “The Patriots deserve an asterisk” — it wasn’t in the story. If he had said it, Myers would have put it in quotes.
don’t you think respectable reporters tape most of their interviews? Instead of shooting the messenger, think about why it took 2 days for Don Shula to “back down”
